If you’re a tea lover, you’ve probably wanted to try Keemun black tea at some point—one of the most highly regarded varieties from China. Alongside Darjeeling, Assam, and Ceylon, it is considered one of the finest black teas in the world.
I recently ordered some of this variety on this website www.umiteasets.com, and I finally got to taste it. What a pleasant surprise! Unlike Indian black teas, which tend to be stronger and more intense, Keemun stands out for its smoothness and elegance.
Origin
Keemun black tea is named after Qimen County in China’s Anhui province, where it is grown. This region lies west of Mount Huang, a forested area that gives this tea its unique aromatic profile. In fact, it is the most famous export product of the region.
What is Keemun Tea Like?
Its leaves are fine, elongated, and slightly curled, with delicate golden tips. When brewed, the liquid takes on a bright red hue, while the wet leaves turn a deep, glossy red.
Aroma & Flavor
Keemun is recognized as one of the most aromatic teas in the world. Its fragrance is intense and long-lasting, with floral notes, hints of honey, and a light fruity touch reminiscent of apple. The term “Keemun aroma” is often used to describe its distinctive blend of honeyed, floral, and fruity notes
On the palate, it is well-balanced and elegant, with a lingering sweet aftertaste.
How to Prepare It
-Heat water to a boil (100°C). If you have an electric kettle, even better.
-Place 1-2 teaspoons of tea in a teapot with a filter or an infuser. I usually use a compact teapot set-perfect for travel (I ordered it along with the tea! 😊).
-Pour the hot water over the tea, cover the teapot, and let it steep for 3 to 5 minutes.
-Serve and enjoy. You can sweeten it if you like, though its natural flavor is delicious on its own.
Tips for the Perfect Cup of tea
- Water temperature: For green and delicate teas, use water between 70°C and 90°C. For black, aged, or oolong teas, boiling water is ideal.
- Tea-to-water ratio: The standard is 1 teaspoon of tea per 250 ml of water, but you can adjust it to your taste.
- Water quality: Use filtered or low-mineral water. Hard water can alter the flavor.
- Steeping time: 3-5 minutes is enough for a balanced tea. Any longer, and it may become bitter.
By following these simple tips, you’ll be able to brew a perfect cup of tea and fully enjoy its flavor and aroma. Give Keemun a try and let me know what you think!
